SPRING HILL BATHS

Built in 1886, Spring Hill Baths was Brisbane’s first in-ground pool. Nestled in a quiet street of original Spring Hill cottages, the Spring Hill Baths are the oldest surviving baths in the southern hemisphere. Surrounded by a ring of quaint individual dressing rooms and traditional grandstand seating, the pool’s heritage features have been lovingly preserved and it is still operating today.

WICKHAM TERRACE CAR PARK

Completed in 1960, this elegant, heritage-listed multi-storey car park was designed by innovative city council architect James Birrell. The giant spiral ramps allowed cars to easily bypass each other going from floor-to-floor, which was highly original at the time, while the embossed wall pays homage to James’s belief that buildings should be artworks too. Architecture enthusiast Tim Ross has called the car park a ‘modernist icon’.

THE OLD WINDMILL

Overlooking the city centre, The Windmill in Wickham Park was one of Queensland’s first stone buildings, built by convicts in 1827. The oldest surviving building in Queensland, the Windmill was commissioned to grind local crops of corn and wheat to feed an increasingly self-sufficient penal colony. As many as 25 convicts worked on a manually powered treadmill for up to 14 hours at a time, gripping an overhead rail while continuously taking steps.
